What happens next for Globalive Communications?
When we first covered Globalive back in December they were an upstart wireless company full of good intentions to bring much-needed competition to the Canadian wireless industry. However, a recent CRTC ruling has now put Globalive’s launch in jeopardy over foreign ownership concerns.
“The commission considered whether non-Canadians do not own or control Globalive as currently structured. The commission determined that Globalive does not meet that test” - CRTC
So where does that leave Globalive? In the short term, the federal government which has a strong interest in seeing a more competitive wireless landscape will take a second look at the CRTC decision. If the government fails to provide remedy or relief to Globalive, there are other options that could be explored including bringing Manitoba Tel into the ownership mix to help satisfy the CRTC.
