Suncor Energy-Petro Canada Merger: Which Brand Will Survive?

suncor petro canadaSuncor Energy has recently announced its plans to purchase/merge with Petro-Canada, making the merged entity the 5th largest integrated oil company in North America.

Both companies are heavily steeped in Canadian business lore. Suncor produced the very first barrel of oil from the Alberta oil sands in 1967. As a former Crown Corporation founded in 1975, Petro-Canada later privatized in 1990, the Petro-Canada brand has long been a symbol of Canadian nationalism.

Here is the video of the announcement of this historic planned merger:

It is understood that the new company will be called Suncor Energy, but that leads to the inevitable question of what fate awaits the Petro-Canada brand name and logo? There is a sentimental and deep-rooted attachment to the Petro-Canada logo thanks to years of branding and sponsorship efforts from grassroots community sports to the Olympic Games.

While there is no official confirmation yet, one would expect to continue to see Petro-Canada branded gas stations for many years to come.

Perhaps the real question that needs addressing is that of competition. After this $13.7 billion merger spawns the largest Canadian oil company, will Canadians be paying even more at the pump?
